Lee College Comprehensive Safety Plan
- Safety Plan
Lee
CollegeGoal 8 is: We will maintain a safe and inviting physical
environment. This
plan is designed to support that goal by providing a comprehensive
approach for a safe College for all members of the campus community.
Our
objective for the safety program will be to reduce injuries to a minimum;
but we will
strive for zero accidents and injuries. Our Safety program will
include:
- Inspections to identify and eliminate unsafe conditions or practices
- Appropriate training of personnel in good safety practices
- Use of necessary personal protective equipment
- Mechanical and physical safeguards for equipment, wherever necessary
- Strong encouragement and support of employees and, where appropriate,
students using safe practices
- Prompt investigations of accidents to ascertain causes and make
recommendations, where feasible, to prevent recurrence of those
causes
- Responsibility
- The Dean of Administrative Services is assigned responsibility
for coordinating environmental
health and safety, including the annual update to this plan.
- All functional area supervisors are responsible for helping to
achieve an effective safety program. Thus, for this safety program
to work, supervisors must also regularly convey strong support
for it. Supervisors also are expected to 1) provide the safeguards
necessary to have safe conditions 2) ensure that operations are
performed safely.
- Employee and, where appropriate, students are responsible for
practicing safety, while in performance of duties or (in the case
of students) attending classes.
- Duties
- The Dean of Administrative Services will:
- Annually evaluate and update this plan and, in conjunction
with other Deans, recommend changes for improvement.
- Provide oversight of the safety program in the Administrative
Services area. This
safety program will include, as a minimum, items 1 through
6 of Section I above.
- Share with other Deans pertinent information concerning safety
and accident prevention.
- Other Deans will:
- Provide oversight of the safety program in their respective
areas. This
safety program will include, as a minimum, items 1
through 6 of Section I above.
- Share with other Deans pertinent information concerning safety
and accident prevention.
- The Human Resource Officer will:
- Receive all accident reports.
- Handle required reporting to other agencies
- Employees will:
- Follow accepted safety practices.
- Report to supervisor safety hazards observed.
- Correct safety hazards immediately, where possible.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working order or replace
defective items.
- Make suggestion for improving safety procedures.
- Assist in investigations of accidents or other incidents
involving safety problems.
- Attend safety meetings and training.
- Report all injuries to the supervisor immediately.
- Emergency Response
Life threatening emergencies are covered in the
brochure entitled “Lee
College Emergency Procedures.” The Dean of Administrative
Services publishes this document annually. Copies are distributed
to all employees and passed out to students during registration.
- Implementation
Implementation
of this plan is delegated to the Deans. Suggestions for implementation
include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Periodic safety meetings and training. These sessions may be
part of another meeting; but they should be documented in the
meeting minutes. Of particular importance is coverage of the use of
available safety equipment in laboratories and other hazardous areas. Equally
significant is familiarizing employees with emergency evacuation
procedures. Other
suggested topics include, among others, results of safety inspections,
review of accident investigations, vehicle safety, hazard communication,
lifting procedures, and suggestions for improving safety. The
definition of periodic is left to the Dean; however,
as a minimum, safety should be included as a topic during in
service or other employee meetings conducted at the start
of each Fall and Spring semester.
- Annual inspections by both supervisors and employees of work
areas to jointly identify and mitigate unsafe conditions. Inspections
should be documented.
- Tracking of hazard corrections. Changes implemented should
be documented.
- Sharing of information among functional areas. The forum for
this exchange may be the President’s Council or other meeting,
at which College Deans, or their designated representatives,
are in attendance. Such information sharing should be documented
in meeting minutes.
- Careful review of all building modifications in order to ensure
easy egress in the event of fire or other emergency.
