Course Title: Advanced Concepts of Adult Health

Course Rationale:

Emphasizing advanced nursing care concepts related to complex health needs of an adult client.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Use the nursing process as the framework to provide safe, individualized therapeutic and caring interventions in a manner inclusive of the participants’ diversity.
  2. Recognize the value of lifelong learning continued nursing education and participation in community and professional organizations.
  3. Make collaborative nursing decisions with clients and families across the life span utilizing the principles and knowledge of biology, psychology, and the humanities within the construct of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
  4. Act within the legal and ethical framework of nursing practice.
  5. Use acquired critical thinking skills as the basis for managing nursing care for groups of clients in structured acute, chronic, and wellness settings.
  6. Apply teaching/learning principles to assist clients and families in making informed health care decisions and achieving levels of wellness.
  7. Use the interpersonal communication skills to collaborate with health care team participants to attain desired client-centered goals.

Specific Tasks Accomplished:

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Compare and contrast the role of the AND graduate, specifically provider, manager, and member of the profession, in meeting the needs of adult clients in the acute care environment.
  2. Evaluate specialized therapeutic and caring interventions implemented in the care of diverse adult clients in the acute care setting.
  3. Apply critical thinking to evaluate nursing process effects in moving the client with acute disruptions in health toward an optimum level of wellness.

Grading Policy:

In order to successfully complete RNSG 2331, the student must achieve an overall course grade of 74.5 or higher. The components used to determine the course grade are as follows.

  1. 1. Satisfactory completion of all components of testing with 74.5 or higher grade will comprise 85% of the final course grade: Unit exams and comprehensive final exam which will be calculated as follows:
    1. Unit exam grades will be computed to achieve a unit exam average. This average will comprise 70% of the course testing score.
    2. A final comprehensive exam grade will comprise 30% of the course testing score.
    3. This course testing score will result in a final course testing score, which will comprise 85% of the final course grade.
  2. Satisfactory completion of theory course assignment(s) with 74.5 or higher grade(s) which will then comprise 15% of the final course grade.

NOTE: Both RNSG 2331 and RNSG 2362 must be successfully completed concurrently in order to progress.

  1. Percentage points (2.0%-level 4) for TNSA participation may be added to the final grade for students meeting the following criteria:
    1. Achievement of a final course testing score and course assignment(s) grade(s) of 74.5 or above and satisfactory performance in RNSG 2362;
    2. Attendance and participation in four (4) TNSA meetings; and
    3. Active participation in four (4) TNSA projects.

Late work will be considered for acceptance only when an extension is requested by the student, in writing, at least 24 hours prior to the due date and permission is granted by the instructor.

Methods of Instruction:

  1. Classroom Experience:
    1. Four and half (4.5) hours a week will be spent in the classroom unless otherwise specified. This time will be utilized by the instructor to introduce the material to be covered during this week. Guest speakers, audiovisual materials, and workbook exercises may be used by the instructor to present material.
  2. Competency Laboratory:
    1. The Learning Resources Laboratory is open Monday through Friday. Check laboratory schedule for hours available for additional supplemental learning activities.
  3. Written Clinical Assignments:
    1.  The second part of the theory course grade is measured by course assignment(s) and satisfactory completion of written assignments as assigned by the instructor. The student must achieve a minimum of 74.5 or higher on all assignments to pass the course. If 74.5 points are not achieved on the course assignments, one attempt to modify/rewrite each will be provided to achieve the 74.5 points. No more than 74.5 points will be given on the second attempt.
