Admission Requirements

Program Overview

The Vocational Nursing Program is an intense one year program including both classroom and clinical components. The program is full time, Monday through Thursday. Classroom components are during the day. Most clinical experiences are scheduled during the day; however, there may be some required night clinical assignments. Admission to the Vocational Nursing program is once a year, in the fall, and based on the following point system:

Required Points:

• Application on file in the Allied Health Office.
• Copy of high school diploma or GED certificate in VN folder in Allied Health Office.
• Degree Plan from Counseling Center signed by counselor.
• Documented reading level.
• Complete Lee College assessment/placement tests and complete developmental courses, if required.
• Demonstrate competencies in Allied Health Math 110 or “C” or better on advance placement test for Math 110.
• Mandatory information session with VN faculty (check website or call 281-425-6448 for scheduled times).

Bonus points:

• BIOL 2404-Human Body-(no more than 2 years old as of VN program admission date; Example: If 2404 is taken in fall of 2006 you must enter the program no later than fall 2008) “B” or better required. (If this course is taken prior to entering the program, the student will not have to take BIOL 2404 during the fall semester of the VN program).

• BIOL 2401 AND BIOL 2402--(no more than 2 years old as of VN program admission date; Example: If 2401 is taken in fall of 2006 and 2402 in spring 2007, you must enter the program no later than fall 2008) “B” or better required. (If these courses are taken prior to entering the program, the student will not have to take BIOL 2404 during the fall semester of the VN program).
• HITT 1305-Medical Terminology. (If this course is taken prior to entering the program, the student will not have to take HITT 1305 during the spring semester of the VN program.
• COSS 300-Study Skills
• ITSC 1309-Integrated Software Applications I
• GPA (based on BIOL 2404 or BIOL 2401 and 2402, MATH 110, and HITT 1305) – (4.0 = 1 point; 3.9-3.0 = .75 point; 2.9-2.0 = .50 point.)

Applications are taken year round; students are encouraged to apply by February 1 for fall entry. Obtain VN admission packet from the Allied Health Office, the Counseling Center or on-line. Classes are selected the first week in June (for entry the following fall semester); therefore no points are calculated for admission after May 30th. Class size is limited and there are more applicants than slots. Although completion of recommended bonus points will improve your chance of acceptance into the program, it does not guarantee your admission into the program.

Allied Health Applications will not be accepted without documentation of completed required immunizations.

Texas Department of Health and Human Services Required Immunizations:

Students in institutions of higher education enrolled in health related courses (nursing and EMT) which involve direct patient contact must show evidence of the immunizations listed below: 

1. One dose of Tetanus/Diphtheria toxoid (Td) 10 year limit;
2. Students who were born on or after January 1, 1957, must show documentation of two doses of measles-containing vaccine administered since January 1, 1968;
3. One dose of rubella vaccine;
4. Students born on or after January 1, 1957, must show documentation of one dose of mumps vaccine;
5. Acceptable documentation of varicella (chicken pox) vaccination or disease;
6. Completed Hepatitis B vaccinations, including dates, or serologic confirmation of immunity of hepatitis B virus.

Physical, Labs, and TB and/or Chest X-ray Requirements

A physical examination inclusive of laboratory work is required upon admission.  A current TB screening is required.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Requirements

A current CPR card and current First Aid card is required prior to clinical for nursing students and must be renewed as required thereafter.  You can check the schedules at the following locations for class times: Lee College Continuing Education, American Heart Association, and/or American Red Cross.
