They did it — after amassing more than 60 awards and honors at tournaments in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, the Lee College debate team capped off its record-setting inaugural season last week by earning three national championship titles.
A celebration for the team will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17, in the Student Center on campus.
The Debate Team competed April 10-13 at the 2014 International Public Debate Association (IPDA) National Championship Tournament on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University, returning to Baytown with the 2013-14 IPDA Community College Championship, Community College Sweepstakes Championship and overall Novice Debater Champion award for team co-captain Zachary Martin.
In addition, co-captain Cody Bijou earned second-place honors overall for novice debaters this season, placed second in the Novice Debate division at the championship tournament and finished as a quarter-finalist in the tournament’s Novice Debate division. Fellow teammate Reagan Dobbs, captain-elect for the 2014-15 debate team, won third-place honors for novice speakers at the championship tournament and finished as a double octo-finalist in the tournament’s Novice Debate division. Martin also finished as a triple octo-finalist in the same division.
