Lee College named Military Friendly School

Lee College was recently named to the 2014 Military Friendly Schools List. It is the second consecutive year that the college has received the distinction. The list represents the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that go above and beyond to embrace military service members, veterans and their families and ensure their success — not only while they are enrolled as students, but also after graduation.

The “Military Friendly Schools” list was developed by Victory Media, a veteran-owned company that operates five global brands focusing on the military community and personnel transitioning into civilian life. The list was compiled through research and free, data-driven surveys completed by more than 10,000 Veterans Affairs-approved schools across the country.

More than 320 veterans are currently enrolled at Lee College, according to Ehab Mustafa, a veteran himself and director of the college’s Veterans Center. Each receives services such as academic advising, certification and advising for benefits like the G.I. Bill and Hazlewood exemption, and moral and mental health support that includes mentoring and career guidance.

“Overall, we strive to provide support and up-to-date information on Veterans’ benefits and other important events such as job fairs, job openings and internship opportunities,” Mustafa said. “Our goal is to help them with the reintegration process to the workforce and higher education.”

Staff at the Veterans Center work diligently to develop programs and initiatives that address every need a veteran or service member may have and link them to a variety of key resources, Mustafa said. They have started a veterans’ library for school books, launched a peer-to-peer tutoring program and created a space on campus where veterans can relax and interact with one another in a friendly environment.

“We take a more personal approach because each veteran is different,” said Mustafa, who helps students put together individualized education plans that detail their personal academic and career goals; outline the steps they need to take to achieve those goals; and hold them accountable for meeting targets along the way.
