The Lee College volleyball team has been named a 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Team in recognition of its achievements in the classroom.
The NJCAA announced the academic qualifying teams and teams of the year this week in various sports. To be considered, the overall GPA of all team members had to be at least 3.0. The Lady Rebels earned a combined GPA of 3.35 during the 2013-14 school year.
“It’s their behavior, their seriousness about school and their values” that distinguish the 2013-14 volleyball squad, said head coach Tracie Johnson.
“This group has been my dream team,” Johnson said. “They respect others and they appreciate what has been given to them. They’ve worked really hard on the court, off the court and even off campus. They all have done extremely well and made our college and community very proud.”
All four of the Lady Rebel sophomores who were on the team during the 2013-14 season graduated from Lee College in May, and will continue their education and athletic careers at the university level. Middle blocker Whitney Cornett will play at the University of St. Thomas in Houston; defensive specialist/setter Jenna Jackson will play at Lamar University in Beaumont; and outside hitter Helena Gunnarsdottir and setter Adria Morales will both play at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La.
