Catalog Description: This course presents the fundamentals of legal research and writing. Topics include standard and electronic legal research, and legal writing techniques including case and fact analysis and citation format.

Course Title: Legal Research and Writing
Course Rationale:
Provide knowledge on how to use a law library in order to perform legal
research.
Learning Objectives:
Locate, read, and understand primary and secondary legal authority; design
and implement effective research strategies; be familiar with computer assisted
legal research tools and the proper role of these tools; and write clear,
concise legal memoranda and briefs. Define and use legal terminology relating to legal research and writing;
proper use and upkeep of a law library.
Specific Tasks Accomplished:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to accomplish the
following tasks:
- Locate, read, and understand primary and secondary legal authority.
- Design and implement effective research strategies.
- Be familiar with computer assisted legal research tools and the proper
role of these tools.
- Write clear, concise legal memoranda and briefs.
- Analyze a set of facts and perform legal research using research
materials commonly found in a law library.
