Course Title: Civil Litigation
Course Rationale:
Most law offices are involved in the litigation process in some way,
regardless of the office’s area(s) of practice. Much of the typical paralegal’s
time is spent on litigation related tasks.
Learning Objectives:
Define and properly use terminology relating to civil litigation; locate,
describe, and analyze sources of law relating to the civil litigation
process; describe the role and ethical obligations of the paralegal in civil
litigation; and draft documents commonly used in civil litigation. Understand legal terminology and concepts relating to civil litigation and
the law of evidence.
Specific Tasks Accomplished:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to accomplish the
following tasks:
- Define and properly use terminology relating to civil litigation.
- Locate, describe, and analyze sources of law relating to the civil
litigation process.
- Describe the role and ethical obligations of the paralegal in civil
litigation.
- Draft documents (pleadings, motions, orders, and discovery) commonly
used in civil litigation.
- Apply principles of the law of evidence to fact situations.
- Digest a deposition.
