Course Title: Real Property

Course Rationale:

Property is one of the oldest and fundamental areas of law. Many attorneys limit their practices to real property law matters.

Learning Objectives:

Define and properly use terminology relating to real property; locate, describe, and analyze sources of law relating to real property; describe the role and ethical obligations of the paralegal in real property; and draft documents commonly used in real property.

Specific Tasks Accomplished:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to accomplish the following tasks:

  1. Define and properly use terminology relating to real property.
  2. Locate, describe, and analyze sources of law relating to real property.
  3. Describe the role and ethical obligations of the paralegal regarding real property transactions.
  4. Draft documents commonly used in real property transactions.
  5. Write proper citations of law relating to real property.
  6. Apply principles of the law relating to real property to fact situations.
  7. Describe the elements of a deed and explain the legal significance of each.
  8. Describe the elements of a real estate lease and explain the legal significance of each.
  9. Define a mechanics lien and explain how it is created and perfected.
  10. Describe and explain the system of recording and searching for public documents.
  11. Read and interpret a survey.
  12. Read and interpret a settlement (closing) statement.
