Course Title: Internship-Legal Assistant/Paralegal

Course Rationale:

The internship is a “capstone” experience in which the student is exposed to a law office environment and has an opportunity to put into practice the skills taught in the classroom setting.

Learning Objectives:

As outlined in the learning plan, Apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

Specific Tasks Accomplished:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to accomplish the following tasks:

  1. Master the theory, concepts, and skills involving the tools, materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, and legal systems associated with the legal and paralegal professions; and
  2. Demonstrate ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, communicating in the applicable language of the legal and paralegal occupations.

    1. Present a professional appearance.
    2. Perform professional telephone etiquette.
    3. Perform law library updating tasks.
    4. Use law office technology properly.
    5. Perform proper mail handling techniques.
    6. Perform substantive legal work assignments.
    7. Keep time records.
    8. Explain proper law office billing and bookkeeping techniques.
    9. Explain proper client file and record keeping techniques.
  5. Explain proper docket and deadline control techniques.
