City of Anahuac

Established in the 1830's by the Mexican Government as the capital of Texas, Anahuac (pronounced "anna-WHACK") is one of the oldest settlements in Texas. It was at Fort Anahuac that Texans first rose up in opposition to the Mexican Government, a resistance which culminated in the Texans winning their freedom from Mexico in 1836. There are over 30 official Texas Historical Markers throughout the area, including a 1936 Centennial Marker, commemorating this historical site and the people, places and events which ultimately lead to Texas` independence.

In addition to its historical significance, The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and the surrounding area is a naturalist's delight! With its prolific wildlife and its beautiful waterways and estuaries, Anahuac attracts a cross-section of tourists from bird watchers to hunters and fisherman.

The City of Anahuac is located primarily in the middle of the county. It serves as the main business center for the smaller unincorporated communities of Wallisville, Hankamer, Double Bayou, Oak Island, and Smith Point. With Interstate 10 located six miles north of the city limits and many other state and local highways, such as State Highway 61, FM 562, FM 563, FM 1724, and Jenkins Road, linking the area, transportation of goods and services could have a positive economic impact on this area.

Also, the Chambers-Liberty Counties Navigation District maintains the Port of Anahuac along the Trinity River at the foot of Miller Street and Bolivar Avenue in Anahuac. The Anahuac Ship Channel connects the port to the Houston Ship Channel via a passage approximately eight feet deep and 120 feet wide. The nearest public barge dock is at Anahuac Towing and Shell Company, with the two deep-water ports, one 32 miles away at the Port of Beaumont, and the other 45 miles to the west at the Port of Houston.

The nearest air service is The Oscar F. Nelson Airport at Anahuac with 5,000 feet of runway. Commercial service is available 35 miles away at Jefferson County Airport and 60 miles at Bush Intercontinental and Hobby Airports. A private airport facility is located on the west side of Chambers County, approximately 20 miles from Anahuac
