The Freshman Follow-Up Seminar serves as a check-in with an advisor as well as a platform for delivering pertinent information. Collaboration from Academic and Advising professionals at Lee College have determined a need for mandatory second semester advising for first time in college freshman to aid in the goals of student success and retention.
Freshman Follow-Up teaches students the skills necessary to navigate the process of college. With less time spent trying to learn how to navigate the college process, students are able to spend more time on academic and student affair endeavors. The seminar also serves as a follow up to New Student Orientation, expanding on information they have learned while providing additional information regarding college procedures, regulations and resources.
Important topics that are covered include:
- Mandatory developmental education
- Enrollment into special programs
- Prerequisites and co-requisites
- The importance of course planning
- Students’ rights and responsibilities
- Academic warning, suspension and probation
- Tips on how to meet with professors
- The breakdown of advisors and counselors
- Graduation requirements
- Recommended course load
- Realistic time completion for degree and certificate programs
- The academic requirements tutorial
- Campus resources
Additionally, students are given a resource packet to follow along with during the presentation. With these tools we encourage students to become advocates for themselves and their education. At the end of the session, students are able to take the resource packet with them and are encouraged to use it throughout their career at Lee College.
Attendance for freshman follow-up will be required of all first-time-in-college students who are in the process of completing their first semester at Lee College. A hold will be placed on your account and you will not be allowed to register until you complete the seminar. We will have several dates and times from which to choose. Sessions are expected to last approximately 60 minutes. Students are expected to be ON TIME. Students who arrive more than 5 minutes late will be required to reschedule. We also offer Freshman Follow-Up online. Student can chose to either complete the face-to-face or online versions to satisfy this requirement.
