What is the GED?

GED (General Educational Development) Tests measure the outcome of a high school education. The GED Tests consist of five sections: Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Writing Skills, and Interpreting Literature and the Arts. The GED Tests are available in English, Spanish, French, large-print, audiocassette, and Braille. Accommodations for testing conditions are permitted for adults with disabilities.

  • Adult Learning Center: 281-425-6536 (for information on GED preparation courses)
  • GED Scores: 512-463-9292 (to request additional score reports)

If you are interested in taking the GED, examinees must pre-register for testing (or re-testing) in Moler Hall, Counseling Center. You will need to bring the following information:

  • Current Texas Drivers License, Texas D.P.S. Photo ID, or a government issued identification card (both national and foreign) provided that the identification includes date of birth, photograph, address, and signature

  • Reschedule: A GED examinee applicant is allowed to reschedule their exam the first time for free. After the first reschedule the applicant will be charged $10 for each rescheduled date.

Who can take the GED test?

Eligibility for GED testing is established by the Texas Education Code, Section 7.111, which states that a resident of the state who has not graduated from high school is eligible to take the high school equivalency test in accordance with rules established by the State Board of Education.

  • be 18 years of age; and
  • be a resident of the state; and
  • not be enrolled in school; and
  • not be a high school graduate.

An applicant 17 years of age may test if the applicant:

  • is a resident of the state; and
  • is not enrolled in school (exception is made if the applicant is enrolled in an approved in-school GED preparation program); and
  • is not a high school graduate; and
  • has parental/guardian permission.

OR

  • is married (must provide proof) or
  • has entered military service (must provide proof) or

  • has otherwise legally severed the child/parent relationship (must provide proof) or
  • a student is enrolled in an HSEP (High School Equivalency Program) approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) (must provide proof).

An applicant 16 years of age may test if the applicant:

  • is a resident of the state; and
  • is not enrolled in school; and

How can someone who has lost his/her GED certificate or test scores find their record?

Records of all certificates issued in Texas are on file at the GED Unit, Texas Education Agency. A candidate's complete name, date of birth, and Social Security Number are needed to locate a file. Requests from third parties, such as schools or employers, must bear a release signed by the record-holder.

If you wish to request a new or duplicate GED certificate, call: 512-463-9292 or go to: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/ged/index.html or http://www.acenet.edu/clll/ged/index.cfm.
