What is a typical appointment?
Plan to spend about 90 minutes for your first appointment with an education specialist if you are completing your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). He or she will answer any admissions-related questions that you have about how to decide on a college, which program will work for you, if part-time or full-time classes suit your schedule, purpose of placement testing, etc.
Many students need financial assistance in order to attend college. The specialist will explain the financial aid process step by step. If you qualify for federal student aid, the money is for YOU but then YOU must be the one to complete all the steps that get YOU the money. Completing the FAFSA is just the first step in the process. Deadlines are important in the financial aid process. The specialist will explain where you are in the deadline process for the semester that you want to attend college.
After your first appointment, you may want to schedule a follow up appointment. Otherwise, the specialist will contact you to monitor your progress toward college enrollment. It’s important that you keep your contact information (cell phone, email, address) up to date. You will leave the appointment with a GOALS CHART that lists the next steps to take for enrolling in college. You are encouraged to contact the office at 281-421-0553 anytime you have questions. You will also receive an EOC folder with a variety of college-related information, including financial literacy programs.
