A healthcare program information session will be held 5:30-7 p.m. in the Phyllis Davis room.

The Lee College Center for Workforce and Community Development will host the session to showcase its array of healthcare programs and help potential students get on the fast track toward a career in the medical field.

Attendees will learn more about nearly a dozen non-credit healthcare programs offered through the workforce center, including certified nurse aide; phlebotomy technician; EKG technician; clinical medical assistant; medical administrative assistant; registered dental assistant; and even veterinary assistant. There will also be light refreshments, hands-on activities and an opportunity for potential students to speak one-on-one with experienced college faculty and staff.

The Houston-Sugarland-Baytown metropolitan area is among the fastest-growing metro areas in the nation for healthcare jobs, according to an analysis recently released by Idaho-based economics firm EMSI and CareerBuilder. More than 325,000 positions in the area are expected to be in the healthcare industry this year, representing a 5.2 percent increase from 2012.

Many of the healthcare programs offered through the workforce center are only 6-10 weeks long, allowing students to quickly gain the knowledge and skills they need to get a job — whether they’re looking for a stepping stone to a more advanced medical career, exposure to the industry, or the chance to earn more money and make a better life.

“Some people may have never even stepped foot in a medical facility,” said Christina Ortiz Bergvall, healthcare program manager. “We want to make that transition as smooth as possible by providing the type of training a person needs to be successful.”
