Approved as written.

Non-Smoking Campus Update

Captain Velez reported that there has been very little resistance to the enforcement of the new smoke free campus regulations. For now, individuals are being allowed to smoke in their car. Several suggestions were made by the committee to better communicate the new policy to the campus and the Baytown community.

  • The signage is good with a reference to a healthy campus and helps to reinforce the new policy. The committee feels that there needs to be more signage especially in areas for the public including the arena and the performing arts center.
  • It was suggested that the College send out a press release on the new policy to the community. Another alternative would be to contact Sonia Barrett, a LC student who writes a column for the Baytown Sun.
  • The committee would like to provide information regarding smoking cessation programs that would complement the smoke-free campus policy.

Campus Survey – UTMB Assistance

As we discussed at our last meeting, we are now working with the Masters of Public Health Program at UTMB who are willing to provide a graduate student to possibly create and administer a survey on campus—one regarding usage and perceptions of AOD use. Rosemary, Amber, and Howard met with them by phone and will follow up before the next meeting. It’s unclear whether they will have their own survey or if we will be purchasing the CORE survey to use.

Health Fair – March 28th
The Drug Free Campus Committee will work with BACODA to host a booth at the College Health Fair on March 28th at 1 p.m. We will have the Instagram photo booth and we can give out information on the advantages of going smoke free as well as provide information on smoking cessation programs. If any of the committee members want to participate, they are welcome to come out.

Update on Behavioral Intervention Team

Rosemary and Captain Velez are on the newly formed BIT Core Team. Staff or students can report concerning behavior, which will be investigated by the team. It also allows individuals to report anonymously through our online reporting system, Convercent. Once the website is up, the core team will be sharing more information with the campus community. It was suggested that information on the BIT be added to other documents and publications including the Drug Free Campus Statement. Other suggestions included

  • Having information on the BIT on course syllabi
  • Have a link through the student’s myLC campus account
  • Investigate the possibility of having the phase II students of the prevention grant present a
workshop on the importance of bystander interventions and reporting.

Spring Event

Due to time constraints with the Baytown PD, the proposed Town Hall meeting is postponed. For the spring activity, it was suggested that we focus on the campus survey that will be done with the help of UTMB.

Other News / Open Discussion

  • Amber gave an update on Coalition Activities
    • There is still a concern with Kush (synthetic cannabinoids) in the Baytown area with the Baytown PD reporting a rise in Kush incidences. In November and December of last year, the incidences were higher than they have been for the past two years.
    • With the help of the Prevention Resource Center, there will be a new prevention billboard in Baytown near the LC campus.
    • Galveston County Coalition is working with the Center for Addiction Research to sponsor a Town Hall meeting at UTBM on March 29th featuring Dr. A Thomas McLellan, chairman of the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia and former deputy director of the National Drug Control Policy. He will be speaking on “Modern, Effective Care for Substance Use Disorders: Findings from the 2016 Surgeon General’s Facing Addiction Report. A copy of the flyer will be sent out to the committee members. The event is free to the public.
  • Paige shared some concerns about athletics and how we can better support both the volleyball and basketball team during their orientation before the fall semester.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be March 7 at 2 p.m. in the ATC Conference Room.
