SGA Minutes: 2011, 09-22

  • Officer Reports
    • President – April Cordero:
      • Opened floor to John Britt; spoke about the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship award information and requirements as well as Lee College’s impressive track record for students who receive awards. Due date to apply to the Lee College panel is October 7th. JKC is a transfer scholarship. Also spoke about the All USA Today writing competition. Stated that UT-D offers a full ride scholarship to those who are selected and Dr. Hale is the contact on campus for information regarding the requirements. It is also a transfer scholarship.
      • Opened floor to Mike Wilson from Community and Schools; seeking volunteers and staff to assist with after-school programs designed to educate and offer discipline to children and teenagers. Programs include Man Up, Girl Power, Book Worm Club, and College Readiness.
      • April Cordero; stated that the 9/11 remembrance set up by the VPA was very nice and thanked everyone who attended.
    • Vice President – Markki Thibodeaux: Open Forum with Dr. Michael Murphy is set for October 11th at 2:00 pm.
    • Treasurer – Candy Rodriguez: Absent
    • Secretary – Lesley Bobo: Fair Trade Commission is still open for anyone who wishes to join. Student Body survey was a success with 191 replies. Thanks to all who participated. Survey was designed to give the new Executive Board an idea of how the student body feels and Dr. Kemper and Dr. Suchon have requested to see the data.
    • Public Relations – Open
    • Parliamentarian – Terrance Herman: Supported the Volleyball team and reminded everyone to support them as they may be cut. Stated the 9/11 remembrance was nice and to bless all those affected.
    • CAB – Mike Spletter: Volleyball Spirit Night – Kinesiology had the most people in attendance (18); 25 is required to get money. October 18 is the next Volleyball Spirit Night. Photo balloons on Thursday September 29th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Student Center. Wednesday October 12th Mattress Mack will have a lecture in Tucker Hall. Dr. Lattier students will receive bonus points in class for attending. Fall Festival is October 27th; will begin taking requests on October 10th at 8 am. For all clubs who wish to use social media, they must now fill out a form and submit it to Mike’s office.

    • President’s Council – No report at this time
    • Safety and Security – Meetings are set for the 1st Thursday of each month
    • President Search: Next meeting is Monday Oct. 17 from 3–5 pm
    • Board of Regents: Next meeting was Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.

    • a. Reminder about Officer Training. SGA needs student name and ID number, not their e-mail address
  • New Business
    • Bylaw changes: Marcus Omtvedt with Phi Theta Kappa suggested amending the proposed bylaw changes. A discussion was held. Marcus feels that a committee needs to be set up to develop the bylaw amendments. The issue was tabled.
