Questions to Ask Employers

If your major is not listed as one of the preferred majors:

• I understand you are here to talk to students about careers primarily in ________. I assume your company also has people who do ________. Do you have information on that department, or can you tell me who I should contact?
• Can you briefly talk about the types of jobs your organization has to offer?

If you are exploring career choices:

• I see you hire people for careers in _______. Can you tell me more about that?
• Are there certain undergraduate courses you would suggest if I want to enter this field.
• What special skills does it take to be successful in ______?  
• Will I need an advanced degree (Masters, Ph.D) to advance in your organization?

• How would you describe the environment you work in?
• How would you describe a typical day at work?
• What are the major rewards of your job?
• What are the major frustrations you encounter on the job?

• Who do you know that may be willing to speak with me, as well? May I use your name when contacting him or her?
• What advice would you give a person who wants to be employed by your company?
• Do you anticipate much demand in ________ in the upcoming year(s)?
