STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

With this award, Lee College will focus on improving the academic quality of STEM programs through curriculum revision and development, or faculty development; developing research opportunities for students in STEM fields; providing or improving student services including counseling, tutoring, mentoring, or establishing learning communities; encouraging secondary students to pursue STEM degrees and careers through outreach activities; and improving STEM facilities and equipment needed for science instruction and computer laboratories.

Know STEM

The FASTEST growing and HIGHER PAYING careers are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). STEM subjects such as algebra and physics are not easy courses or easy to learn, but they are skills that lead to amazing STEM careers. Math is the technical foundation for the other three fields: science, technology, and engineering. STEM allows us to solve real-world problems by developing systems, structures, manufacturing, generating and revolutionizing tools, techniques, and methods to improve our way of life. It is important to note that individuals with STEM degrees who enter STEM careers experience lower unemployment rates compared with workers who enter other fields, which means STEM workers enjoy greater job security.

STEM at Lee College

Lee College was selected to receive HSI STEM grants in both 2011 and 2016, and used grant funds to establish the first STEM Center on campus in 2013. One of the goals of the STEM Grant is to increase underrepresented enrollment in STEM majors. The first goal is to boost STEM awareness to our local and surrounding school districts and communities by hosting various STEM events and attending college, careers and community fairs/events The second goal is to increase the number of individuals pursuing a STEM degree and assist in the transfer process. We also offer STEM service learning experiences with local K-12 schools and community organizations. In addition, we host various STEM professional panels to engage with students and give them more information about educational programs and careers in STEM.

STEM Hub

The STEM Hub is open to all Lee College students including IMPACT and Dual Credit students. We offer FREE tutoring in math and science courses. The STEM Hub includes both PCs and Macs equipped with programs students use in their classrooms and labs, such as AutoCAD, MatLab, Visual Studio, and the Microsoft Office suite. There is also ample room for tutors to work with students individually and in groups on biology, chemistry, engineering, human anatomy and physiology, all levels of math, physics, and process technology, as well as free printing for up to 10 pages of material. The STEM Hub is equipped with two collaboration stations ideal for a small group work/studying. The collaboration stations allow students to display their laptops on a larger monitor.

STEM Camp

STEM Camp offers hands-on, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and team-building skills through fun and engaging activities. STEM Camp is open to all 9-12 graders who reside in the Lee College service area. Lee College does not provide transportation. Registration for up to 45 students is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Camp registration opens in early May and is hosted in mid-July. Students must commit to attend all week.
