PeopleSoft and Lee College:
The Relationship Begins . . .
Dr. Carolyn A. Lightfoot Director, Technology,
Research & Planning
With only one programmer maintaining the 1980s-era, batch
COBOL system and the college requiring more user-friendly reporting capabilities,
Lee College decided to embarked upon a search beginning in 1994 for an
integrated financial and student records system. The college was looking
for a system that would streamline the flow of information (financial,
HR, student administration) throughout the college. Finally, on June 20,
2000, the President and Board of Regents decided upon PeopleSoft as the
software that will provide a unified solution to help manage all student
administration, financial accounting, payroll and human resource processes.
The official start of the project began on July 10, 2000
when the college's functional and technical teams met with the PeopleSoft
consultants to discuss the rapid implementation process. For those of
you who have not heard, the PeopleSoft database management system will
replace the Student Records/Registration system and Bi-Tech Financial/General
Ledger system. PeopleSoft is a client-server, graphical user interface
(GUI) distributed system that allows users to quickly access and develop
strategic reports from student administration, human resources and financial
accounting data.
Eventually, as the relationship grows, PeopleSoft will
interact with our entire Lee College community through the Web-students
can access their records and registrations, and faculty can connect
with the human resources and student systems via the web and administrators
can track enrollments, update information quickly and accurately and provide
up-to-date statistical analysis. This software will provide more functionality
than ever before to each academic and technical-vocational division as
well as to administrative offices.
