Biography in Context: Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox tribe, was one of the greatest all-around athletes of all time, playing football, baseball, and winning gold twice in the 1912 Olympics. Upon winning the decathlon, King Gustav of Sweden reportedly addressed Thorpe as “the greatest athlete in the world” and presented him with many gifts, including a silver, bejeweled Viking ship.
