The purpose of the Biology Department is to provide courses in Biological Sciences that ensure scientific literacy for an educated citizenry in a world of rapid advances, to provide effective and transferable biology courses in order to ensure the success of students transferring to universities and other institutions of higher learning, and to provide an adequate basic biology education for students going into allied health or other science or technical careers.

At Lee College most of the biology courses satisfy the core curriculum requirement of 8 hours of natural science. Most of the Biology courses include both a lecture and laboratory component. The lab reinforces concepts taught in lecture and also gives students hands-on experience using the microscope and other equipment to study cells, tissues, and live and preserved specimens. Various biological phenomena are elucidated by performing experiments.

The biology program leading to the associate degree is a base from which a biology or biology-related career can be launched.

The Department is an active participant in the Honors Program, and students who qualify my enroll in a General Biology course with an honors component. For more information on the honors component contact Pam McManus or Judy Lehmberg.
