Executive Assistant to the President - Administration - Lee College Administration Executive Assistant to the President for Resource Development Roberta Wright Roberta Wright has been at Lee College since 1985 as a member of the English faculty and, since 1997, as Executive Assistant to the President for Resource Development. Resource Development is the area of the college that looks for funds besides taxpayers' money to support the programs of the college. Three areas are involved in this: the Lee College Foundation, the Friends of Lee College, and grant writing. The Foundation, established in 1968, raises funds primarily for scholarships. It currently has 176 named scholarships and over $2.5 million in assets. Any full time student or potential student is eligible to apply for one of these scholarships. More information is available from the Financial Aid Office on the Baytown campus. The Friends of Lee College is a more informal support group that raise money for college projects like that expansion of the Wellness Center, the purchase of computers for the music program, the sunshade for the tennis bleachers, the gameroom in Moler Hall and many, many others. Since 1986, they have raised more than $1.7 million. The college writes grants for many projects at the college and in the community. Some of the grants come from private foundations like the Houston Endowment which gave our nursing program money to buy hospital beds for nursing students to practice with or the state or federal government which makes money available for colleges to compete for to get needed equipment and personnel. about_accredititation.asp about_accredititation.asp 127547 2 512 About Lee College Accreditation Lee College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools... About - Lee College About Lee College History Lee College was established in 1934, and when registration was completed for that first semester, 177 students had enrolled in the inaugural session of Lee Junior College of Goose Creek, Texas. The Board of Trustees of the Goose Creek Independent School District had agreed as early as 1931 that a junior college should be established to provide educational opportunity to students who could not otherwise afford it. The first graduation was on May 24, 1935, with four women receiving diplomas: Juanita Barrington (Mrs. David Holm), Byrtis Avey (Mrs. Elmer Brinkley), La Del Payne (Mrs. Barney Hillard) and Hudnall Spence (Mrs. Robert Southwick). A 33 percent increase in the fall of 1935 boosted enrollment to 236. The founders of the college were interested in providing a strong academic curriculum and a comprehensive technical/vocational curriculum. In 1936, the vocational program was initiated. Later, it became known as the Robert E. Lee Institute, Vocational Division of Lee Junior College. No college credit was given for work in the institute until 1941, and it did not become an integral part of the college until 1945, following a two-year period when no technical/vocational courses were offered. By the mid-1940s, the administration and faculty of the college had become increasingly aware that the college needed its own governing board. In 1945, Walter Rundell, one of the original faculty members, became Dean of Lee College. Dean Rundell became the guiding force behind major developments for the two decades which followed. In 1948, the name was changed to Lee College. In the same year, Lee College gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The association urged Lee College to develop a campus facility separate from the high school. A successful bond election in 1949 led to the completion of the first two buildings, the administration building and the gymnasium. The college moved to the new campus in 1951. Following the move to a separate campus, the growth of the college exceeded the expectations of the leaders, and plans for additional buildings had to be accelerated. A Liberal Arts Building, now Social Sciences, was added in 1958. By 1961, the campus had doubled in size. The library was completed and the gymnasium expanded in 1962. Moler Hall, Technical Vocational Building One, and Bonner Hall followed. Under the leadership of Dean Rundell, Lee College successfully separated from the local public school district in 1965. On August 18, 1965, Lee College’s first Board of Regents, appointed by the public school board, assumed governance of the college. A significant event in the history of Lee College occurred in 1966, when the college, under the leadership of Dean Rundell and George Beto, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Corrections, began a program of courses in the state’s prison system. This program has grown from 182 students that first year to a current enrollment which exceeds 1000 students. In 1966, Dr. Richard Strahan became the first full-time president of Lee College. Since the separation from the local public school district, the college has had seven presidents: Dr. Strahan, 1966-71; Dr. Raymond Cleveland, 1971-73; Dr. Jim Sturgeon, 1973-76; Dr. Robert Cloud, 1976- 86; Dr. Vivian B. Blevins, 1986-1991; Dr. Jackson N. Sasser, 1992-2001, and Dr. Martha M. Ellis, current president. In 1969, Lee College, in cooperation with two Liberty County school districts, began offering courses at Liberty and Dayton. Another milestone in the history of Lee College was the offering of continuing education courses in 1972. These community-oriented, short-term courses have experienced a dramatic growth in popularity and are further evidence of the flexibility of the community college concept. The College also established a program for senior adults in 1972. In 1986, Lee College began two new programs to serve not only Lee College’s district constituents, but also interested citizens outside the college’s service area. The San Jacinto Mall site was the result of cooperation between the mall and the College. Coordination with local groups led to the formation of the Hispanic Educational Access Committee and the Black Educational Access Committee in the fall of 1986. The work of these committees has received favorable national recognition and has served to encourage educational access to these underrepresented groups. The Lee College Foundation, established in 1968 to provide scholarships to deserving Lee College students, today has assets of more than $3.5 million and provides more than 275 scholarships each year. In order to provide funds and volunteers to support educational programs, the Friends of Lee College was founded in late fall of 1986. This group of community volunteers, under the leadership of John B. Tucker, has raised more than $2 million to support College programs and has had a major impact on facilities and programs. A focus on economic development resulted in the Small Business Development Center being opened in 1987. In response to needs of local industries, Lee College began to institute new industrial programs and to revise existing ones. Obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing became possible through an agreement with the University of Texas School of Nursing at Galveston in 1987 for registered nurses in the area. A successful bond election in 1988 enabled the college to initiate a construction program which featured a new science building, a lecture hall, and major renovations to several campus facilities. The 711 West Texas property, acquired in 1990, was renovated to house a performing and fine arts complex in addition to an allied health suite named the McNulty-Haddick Complex in honor of Alma Haddick and her husband Luther. In February 2000, local voters passed a $20 million bond election to build a new advanced technology center/library, a completely renovated gymnasium and newly constructed sports/wellness complex. Other renovations and additional parking were also included. Today over 9,000 Lee College students are enrolled in academic, technical education, and non-credit continuing education programs each semester. Basic education is available for those seeking to improve skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and language in addition to a regionally acclaimed honors curriculum. about_mission.asp about_mission.asp 133755 1 332 About Lee College Mission Statement The primary purpose of Lee College is to provide quality instruction for its students. Academic Honesty Code - Lee College Academic Honesty Code Honesty Code Violations Violations: Any conduct or activity by a student intended to earn or improve a grade or receive any form of credit by fraudulent or dishonest means is considered an Honesty Code violation. In addition, engaging in any conduct including the following examples which a reasonable person in the same or similar circumstances would recognize as academic dishonesty is considered a violation. Examples of violations of the Honesty Code include, but are not limited to, the following: Acquiring information: Acquiring information for any assigned work or examination from any source not authorized by the instructor. Working with another person or persons on any assignment or examination when not specifically permitted by the instructor. Observing the work of other students during any examination. Purchasing or otherwise acquiring and submitting as one’s own work any research paper or other writing assignment prepared by others. Providing information: Providing answers for any assigned work or examination when not specifically authorized by the instructor to do so. Informing any person or persons of the contents of any examination prior to the time the examination is given. Plagiarism: Incorporating the work or idea of another person into one’s own work, whether paraphrased or quoted, without acknowledging the source of that work or idea. Attempting to receive credit for work performed by another person, including papers obtained in whole or part from individuals or other sources. Copying computer programs or data files belonging to someone else. Conspiracy: Agreeing with one or more persons to commit any act of academic dishonesty. Fabrication of information: Falsifying the results obtained from research or a laboratory experiment. Substituting for another student to take an examination or to do any academic work for which academic credit will be received. Changing answers or grades after an academic work has been returned to the student and claiming instructor error. Submitting work for credit or taking an examination and employing a technique specifically prohibited by the instructor in that course, even if such technique would be acceptable in other courses. Abuse of resource materials: Mutilating, destroying, concealing, stealing, or altering any materials provided to assist students in the completion of academic work, including library books, journals, computer files, microfilm and microfiche files, materials placed on reserve by the instructor, or any such materials as the instructor may provide or assign. Copying without permission of the owner, or mutilating or destroying any media, printed or electronic (for example, film, video, music, graphics, art, photography, manuscript, internet or World Wide Web sources, CDROM, or electronic databases). PROCEDURES Students who witness a violation of the Academic Honesty Code should report such violations to the instructor of the course in which the violation occurred. Faculty members who suspect that a student may have violated a provision of the Academic Honesty Code are obligated to investigate the incident and discuss their findings with the student or students involved. Faculty members who conduct such investigations are encouraged to confer with their division chairs, their instructional dean, and/or the Dean of Student Development regarding procedures, valid proof, and due process. Faculty members who determine that a student violated the Academic Honesty Code must take action, both to prevent future violations and to preserve the academic integrity of their courses and the College community. All cases of academic dishonesty must be reported to the Dean of Student Development and the appropriate instructional Dean. The Dean of Student Development will note all cases in an information record system as defined in the final section of this policy statement. The Dean of Student Development will treat violations of the Academic Honesty Code in the manner prescribed below. Penalties for violations of the Academic Honesty Code during a student’s academic career are as follows: First Offense: The student will receive a failing grade on the assignment in question. Second Offense: Student will receive a failing grade for the course. In addition to the penalties laid out above, violations of the Academic Honesty Code that threaten the College’s learning environment may merit further penalties up to and including expulsion. Any additional penalties will be determined by the faculty member in conjunction with the Dean of Student Development. Students may appeal any decision by following the procedures outlined in the next section. STUDENT RIGHTS AND STUDENT APPEALS A student who wishes to appeal an instructor’s determination that he or she violated the Academic Honesty Code or the sanctions levied by the College, may do so by notifying the Dean of Student Development, within ten working days of the decision of his or her desire to appeal that decision to the Academic Appeals Committee. The Academic Appeals Committee shall consist of two faculty members and two students. The Dean of Student Development shall preside over the meeting but have no vote except in the case of a tie. The Academic Appeals Committee will meet to consider the case within thirty (30) days of the appeal. The decision of the Academic Appeals Committee is final. It cannot be appealed within the College. However, a student who is not satisfied with the outcome of this procedure may write a letter explaining his or her position and have it appended to his or her academic record. RECORDS The Dean of Student Development shall maintain a file which contains a record of each Academic Honesty Code violation reported to that office. These records will not, however, be attached to or become a part of the students’ permanent records or transcript unless repeated violations result in the students’ expulsion from the College. In the event that a student is expelled from the College for an Academic Honesty Code violation, his or her transcript will show that the student was administratively withdrawn from the College for disciplinary reasons. administration.asp administration.asp 142368 2 281 Administration Office of the President: Board of Regents President - Dr. Michael Murphy Chief Academic Officer Executive Director of Institutional Advancement... About - Lee College Determination of Equivalent Credit Evaluation of courses to be used for substitution in degree plans shall include the following: Prior LC courses Courses offered prior to 2001 will usually have included crosswalks in the course equivalency segment of PeopleSoft. These crosswalks will be honored. Courses not appearing as equivalency will be examined for inclusion. WECM courses Automatic substitution of identical rubric and number Review of description and objectives of WECM course. If all objectives are covered in the WECM, the course may be approved for substitution. If objectives do not meet all LC course objectives, the course description will be reviewed online or upon receipt of materials from transferring college. Non-WECM/out-of-state courses Online comparison of objectives (if available) or Course description (with objectives) should be reviewed for a determination of comparable outcomes. Courses will only be considered from a college that is accredited by a regional accrediting agency listed in the Higher Education Directory. International courses Courses from foreign institutions must be evaluated by an evaluation service approved by the College. A copy of this evaluation must accompany any request for course substitution. The evaluation will be reviewed for determination of equivalent course outcomes. Clock hour courses No credit is given for clock hour courses Courses for which there is not a direct equivalent at Lee College. If the course is a core course from another Texas college, substitutions will be made based on the transcripting college’s core designation. If the course is not a designated core course, the decision to substitute for will be made by the appropriate dean based on equivalent body of knowledge. More advanced courses A more advanced course may be substituted for a lower level course if the course outcomes of the lower level course would have been met or required as a prerequisite by the higher level course. A higher level course that is required for the program in addition to the lower level course may not satisfy the requirements of both courses. The student who requests a course substitution should take appropriate supporting documentation and a substitution form to the department chair. The chair, in consultation with the lead instructor as appropriate, will make the initial determination of comparability. The student, after obtaining the chair’s signature, will take the form to the appropriate dean who will make the final determination after verifying the above guidelines. The dean will either recommend or reject substitution (with written justification), sign the form, and distribute the form as designated (to the student, dean’s office, and record’s office if for degree substitution and chair’s office if for certificate substitution). The amount of credit applied toward degree or certificate requirements will be equal to that awarded by the original institution or agency. about, accreditation, statistics, mission, statement, vision, future, goals, history current_student.asp current_student.asp 141319 9 1612 Current Students General Information Important Dates --> Programs Available Class Meeting Cancellations Difference Between CE and Credit Classes --> Admissions When... About - Lee College About Lee College History of the Vision Statement In September 2002, President Martha Ellis met with the Planning Committee and charged it with the task of initiating the development of a new vision statement for the college. Dr. Ellis asked that the finished statement reflect the values that the college wishes to honor and provide a clear indication of the directions in which the college wishes to move during the following four to five years. The committee began the process of developing a vision statement by reviewing similar statements implemented by other colleges and by soliciting input from faculty, staff, and students. The first call for suggestions produced about 170 responses. The committee sorted the suggestions that it received into eight categories and, over the course of several meetings, reduced these to a preamble and thirteen “Principles.” The draft statement was forwarded to the president. The statement drafted by the Planning Committee was presented to the President’s Council at its November 11 meeting. It was amended and a new draft was approved at the November 25 meeting. Copies of this draft were then emailed to all Lee College faculty and staff members with the request that they forward their suggestions, corrections, and/or additions to the president. This mailing produced several suggestions that helped clarify the document while reducing the number of principles from thirteen to twelve. The statement was reviewed again at a leadership retreat led by President Ellis in June 2003. Following the retreat, the Planning Committee met again and reviewed the suggestions made at the retreat. This resulted in further changes to the statement. The revised statement was approved by the Board of Regents at its meeting of August 21, 2003. The statement was approved with the understanding that it will remain in effect through the 2008-09 academic year unless unforeseen circumstances – e.g. changes in the state funding available to community colleges, natural disasters, extraordinary opportunities, etc – require that it be re-examined. maps.asp maps.asp 127547 1 64 Maps Campus Locations Driving Directions to Main Campus Baytown Campus Map...
