Bomb Threats & Building Evacuations
In the Event a Student Worker Receives a Threatening Call:
- Try to get the caller to agree to having the call transferred to
the Switchboard—press flash on your phone, waitfor dial tone, dial “O” Operator
and stay on the line until the operator answers. Inform the operator
of the nature
of the call, then hang-up. Do not use ext. #6888. This is a radio phone
that has a 3-minute time limit per call,and its use could ignite a bomb.
- Advise caller you are a student and ask the caller to agree to have
an employee speak to him/her.
- If that fails, attempt to gather as much information as possible.
(Employees can use the form attached to the
Employee packet. Attempt to learn the following:
- When is the bomb set to go off?
- Where is the bomb?
- What is the explosive?
- What does it look like?
- What building is it in?
- Did you place the bomb?
- Why was it set?
- Where are you calling from?
- What is your name?
- Following the previous, ask self:
- What did the voice sound like (man, woman, child, accents, etc.)?
- Were there any identifiable sounds in the background?
- Exact wording of threat.
- Notify someone nearby that you are talking to a threatening individual.
Have the person call the switchboard.
Do not hang up on phone threats; try to keep the caller talking.
If caller
hangs up, immediately call the switchboard and relay pertinent information.
Stay on campus! You will bethe first person the police will want to interview.
Immediately after the call:
Call the switchboard who will contact officials.
A determination will be made by the President concerning the actionto
be taken.
IF BOMB IS FOUND, isolate the area.
- Call the switchboard who will contact
campus officials to begin evacuation. Evacuate in stages starting
withrooms nearest the device.
- Do not: handle device, use two-way radio, attempt to dismantle device,
use pagers, turn lights on or off.
- Re-enter building only after advised by Security officers or building
safety leader.
Building Evacuation and Re-Entry
- Look around your area (quickly) and take note of anything out
of the ordinary. Take nothing with you except
personal items such as, purse, coat, car keys, umbrella or brief case.
- As you leave the building at the nearest exit, take note of anything
unusual in the hallways/stairs.
- Proceed to the EVACUATION AREA designated for your building.
Notices are posted at entry ways of each
building. Remain in the designated area (at least 300 feet from the
structure) until you are notified to return.
