TECM1349 - Technical Math Applications

Catalog Description: Fundamentals of trigonometry and geometry as used in a variety of technical settings. Topics include the use of plane and solid geometry to solve areas and volumes encountered in industry. Lecture Hrs = 3, Lab Hrs = 0

Semester Credit Hours: 3
Lecture Hours per Week:
Contact Hours per Semester: 48
State Approval Code: 2703010000

Course Subject/Catalog Number: TECM 1349
Course Title: Technical Math Applications

Course Rationale:

To prepare students to solve problems which require triangulation or vector analysis. From carpentry to physics, triangle solutions are needed. The applications taught in the geometry section encompass areas and volumes encountered in the petrochemical industry.

Learning Objectives:

Solve right triangle applications; add and subtract vectors; calculate areas of plane surfaces; compute volumes of standard solids; and cross convert units in linear, plane, and volume applications.

Specific Tasks Accomplished: (Beyond WECM)

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Use Pythagorean rule to solve unknown triangular sides
  2. Apply trigonometric ratios to solve triangles
  3. Solve triangle word problems
  4. Define vectors and scalars
  5. Convert rectangular vectors to polar
  6. Convert polar vectors to rectangular
  7. Solve vector word problems
  8. Add vector quantities for a resultant
  9. Define area
  10. Calculate area of common geometric shapes
  11. Convert among common area units
  12. Define volume
  13. Calculate volumes of common geometric solids
  14. Convert among standard volume units
  15. Calculate weight and specific gravity
