Course Title: Technical Math Applications
Course Rationale:
To prepare students to solve problems which require triangulation or vector
analysis. From carpentry to physics, triangle solutions are needed. The
applications taught in the geometry section encompass areas and volumes
encountered in the petrochemical industry.
Learning Objectives:
Solve right triangle applications; add and subtract vectors; calculate areas
of plane surfaces; compute volumes of standard solids; and cross convert units
in linear, plane, and volume applications.
Specific Tasks Accomplished: (Beyond WECM)
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use Pythagorean rule to solve unknown triangular sides
- Apply trigonometric ratios to solve triangles
- Solve triangle word problems
- Define vectors and scalars
- Convert rectangular vectors to polar
- Convert polar vectors to rectangular
- Solve vector word problems
- Add vector quantities for a resultant
- Define area
- Calculate area of common geometric shapes
- Convert among common area units
- Define volume
- Calculate volumes of common geometric solids
- Convert among standard volume units
- Calculate weight and specific gravity
