Course Title: Elementary Stagecraft
Instructional Goals and Purposes:
Lee College’s instructional goals include:
- creating an academic atmosphere in which students may develop their
intellects and skills and
- providing courses so students may receive a certificate/an associate
degree or transfer to a senior institution that offers baccalaureate
degrees.
General Course Objectives:
Introduction to Stagecraft is designed for the beginning theatre
technician/designer. This course is the study and application of the visual
aesthetics of design which may include the physical theatre, scenery
construction and painting, properties and lighting. The course is intended to
expose students to basic technical theatre principles and practices, to
practical problem solving and critical thinking, to world literature, and to
reinforce an appreciation for the craft.
Specific Course Objectives:
- To understand the staging needs of a variety of theatrical productions.
- To identify the parts and functions of the theatrical house.
- To use of basic hand and power tools.
- To understand scenery construction.
- To identify and hang various lighting instruments.
- To be more aware of vocational options in theatre.
- To increase the student’s knowledge of world literature.
Course Content:
Students will be required to do the following:
- Attend class lectures and participate in class discussions and exercises
- Design and complete creative projects
- Complete all graded assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams.
- Attend and review all theatre department productions.
- Read various plays assigned in class.
Students may also be required to:
- Read and research topics in technical theatre.
Methods of Instruction/Course Format/Delivery:
Faculty may choose from but are not limited to the following methods of
instruction: lecture, discussion, Internet, video, television, demonstrations,
field trips, collaboration, and readings.
Assessment:
Faculty may assign both in- and out-of-class activities to evaluate students’
knowledge and abilities. Faculty may choose from the following methods:

Course Grade:
Grading will be based on the successful completion of all of the above course
requirements and in combination with a careful review of your development in
your technical and design work with the following percentages:
