What is Work-Based Learning?

Work-based learning in career and technical education (CTE) exists to connect classroom learning to the workplace, and it prepares students for real-world careers.

The goal of the program is to prepare the next generation of the American workforce. It allows students to gain actual career experience, while pursuing their certification or degree program.

Work-based learning has three distinct qualities that make it successful:

  • Alignment between classroom and workplace learning.
  • Application of academic, technical, and employability skills.
  • Support from classroom and workplace mentors.
