Curriculum and Academic Affairs Committee Minutes

March 18, 2014

Members Present: Paul Allen, Paul Arrigo, Howard Bushart, Layton Childress, Stewart Edwards, Joseph Ganakos, Michael Gos, Karen Guthmiller, Vicky Hart, Joyce Jacobs, Charlotte Mueller, Evan Richards, Doylean Sprauve, Jeff Thies, Tex Woodall. Guests: Georgeann Ward

Meeting was called to order at 2 p.m.

  1. Approval of Minutes: Minutes from February 18, 2014 were approved as written.
  2. Old Business:
  • Cassandra Cookson proposed removing PSYC 2316 from the Lee College catalog. A motion was made by Stewart Edwards and seconded by Joseph Ganakos. Motion carried.
  • Cassandra Cookson proposed removing the Honors symbol from PSYC 2314. A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded by Paul Arrigo. Motion carried.
  • Cassandra Cookson’s proposal for SOCI 1301 (Maintenance Request #290) was withdrawn.
  • Evan Richards presented for Yihfen Yen. Evan Richards proposed changing the course description of BIOL 2421. A motion was made by Evan Richards and seconded by Paul Arrigo. Motion carried.
  1. New Business:
  • Tracy Allen proposed removing ITSC 1309 and SPNL 1301 as a pre/corequisite from RNSG 1162, RNSG 1251 and RNSG 2160. A motion was made by Paul Arrigo and seconded by Joseph Ganakos. Motion carried.
  • Charlotte Mueller presented for Harold Martin. Charlotte Mueller proposed changing the course description and course title of DRAM 2336. A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded by Karen Guthmiller. Motion carried.
  • Teresa Landers proposed replacing EDUC 1301 with EDUC 2301 in the ED 15 AAT degree. A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded Charlotte Mueller. Motion carried.
  • Teresa Landers proposed adding “or EDUC 1301” to TECA 1311 in the first semester of the ED 15 AAT degree. A motion was made by Joyce Jacobs and seconded by Stewart Edwards. Motion carried.
  • Georgeann Ward proposed to disregard the removal of the “H” from the American Studies Honors degree. A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded by Charlotte Mueller. Motion carried.
  • Georgeann Ward proposed updating the list of courses that have been approved for Honors Contracts. New courses are: ARTS 1312, ARTS 1317, ARTS 2314, BIOL 1411, BIOL 2421, DAAC 1319, DAAC 2280, DAAC 2281, EDUC 1301, EDUC 2301, GAME 2332, GAME 2334 and MUSI 1306. A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded by Paul Arrigo. Motion carried.
  • Layton Childress presented for Roberta McClure. Layton Childress proposed a title change to COSC 2325. New title: Computer Organization. A motion was made by Joyce Jacobs and seconded by Joseph Ganakos. Motion carried.
  • The new course HIST 2389 proposed by Cassandra Cookson was withdrawn.
  • Michael Gos presented for Gordon Lee. Michael Gos proposed adding the word “effective” before rhetorical choices in the course description of ENGL 1301. A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded by Charlotte Mueller. Motion carried.
  • Paul Allen presented for Donna Zuniga. Paul Allen proposed replacing BMGT 2388 with BUSG 2309. A motion was made by Stewart Edwards and seconded by Joseph Ganakos. Motion carried.
  • Paul Allen proposed a new Certificate of Completion in Landscape Management. A motion was made by Paul Arrigo and seconded by Joyce Jacobs. Motion carried.
  • Paul Allen proposed making changes to the Associate of Applied Science degree in Horticulture (see Maintenance Request #316). A motion was made by Joseph Ganakos and seconded by Joyce Jacobs. After discussion, motion carried.
  1. Open Forum:

Dr. Jeff Thies asked CAAC committee members to view the Academic Course Guide Manual on the changes to the degree plans and course descriptions.

Dr. Jeff Thies discussed a statement that was received from the State about the acceptance of our proposed core except for MUSI 1303, MATH 2414 and 8 activity KINE courses.

Dr. Cathy Kemper discussed the importance of scanning a copy of the pertinent catalog page and attaching it to the Curriculum Maintenance system request when making changes that are to be submitted to the Coordinating Board.

Michael Gos reminded CAAC members about the upcoming election of next years’ officers. This will take place in April’s meeting.

Joseph Ganakos announced that two students will be attending the debate competition in Tennessee.
